Refugee Resettlement in Washington State

Domestic Medical Screening Examination

Washington’s Refugee and Immigrant Health Program partners with the Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance, local health jurisdictions, and healthcare providers to provide a comprehensive medical screening examination in accordance with the CDC Guidance for the U.S. Domestic Medical Examination for Newly Arriving Refugees.  The Washington State Domestic Medical Screening Guidelines provides state-specific guidance for this screening examination.

The domestic medical screening program was established as part of the Refugee Act of 1980. All refugees and other eligible individuals should receive this comprehensive medical examination that screens for a wide range of infectious diseases and non-communicable conditions.  The domestic medical screening provides clinicians with an opportunity to follow-up on or identify new health concerns that may hinder successful resettlement and self-sufficiency, to promote wellbeing, and to connect refugees with routine and specialty care.
