2021 Health Professions Sunrise Reviews in Progress

Anesthesiologist assistant scope of practice

In 2021, the Washington State House Health Care and Wellness Committee has requested the department review a proposal to regulate a new health profession in Washington, licensed anesthesiologist assistant, to assess whether it meets the sunrise criteria in RCW 18.120.010 for creating a new health profession.

The department’s review has been completed and the final report is posted on the "Sunrise Reviews A-Z” page.

The department shared a draft report with interested parties before submitting the final report to the legislature. 

Midwifery scope of practice

In 2021, the Washington State House Health Care and Wellness Committee requested the department review a proposal to increase the midwifery scope of practice to assess whether it meets the sunrise criteria in RCW 18.120.010 for expanding a regulated health profession's scope of practice.

Optometrist scope of practice

In 2021, the Washington State Senate Health and Long Term Care Committee has requested the department review a proposal to increase the optometrist scope of practice to assess whether it meets the sunrise criteria in RCW 18.120.010 for expanding a regulated health profession's scope of practice.

Mandated benefit sunrise reviews in progress

Infertility treatments

The legislature has requested the Department of Health consider a mandated benefit sunrise proposal that would require coverage of infertility treatments. Coverage would be required under the circumstances identified in H-1640.1/21. The Building Families Coalition is the applicant (or proponent) of this proposal and has submitted a report outlining the statutory criteria in RCW 48.47.030. Details on this proposal, including the draft bill, are below.

The Department of Health is holding a virtual public hearing on Friday, August 20, from 8 a.m. to 10 :00 a.m. To attend the hearing, register on Zoom by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 19. You may also submit written testimony via email at sunrise@doh.wa.gov by 8 a.m. on Friday, August 20.
