What is it?
Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection that is the main cause of bacterial meningitis in young children. It can also cause serious blood infections and pneumonia. It is spread by coughing and sneezing.
What can I do?
All children 2 through 59 months of age should be vaccinated with PCV13. Vaccine is given at two, four, and six months of age. A booster is recommended at 12 to 15 months of age.
Is it safe?
Yes, the pneumococcal vaccine is safe. There is no known association between PCV13 vaccine and serious adverse events.
