Digital Interventions

Promising digital interventions, including smartphone apps and text message programs, are helping reach more Washingtonians who use tobacco, including young adults.

The 2Morrow Health smartphone app helps participants learn new ways to deal with unhelpful thoughts, urges, and cravings caused by nicotine. Participants create a personal profile and set a quit date, then review several lessons, receive notifications, and track their progress along the way. The program is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and provides a personalized, non-judgmental, and private experience. A randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that users assigned to the ACT-based app were 49% more likely to have quit one year later than users assigned to the app based on US Clinical Practice Guidelines.

In 2019, the Department of Health partnered with 2Morrow, Inc. to develop tailored programs to help pregnant women quit smoking and teens and young adults quit vaping. All Washington state residents have free access to the 2Morrow Health Smoking & Tobacco, Quitting While Pregnant, and Vaping cessation programs. Participants sign up at doh.wa.gov/quit and complete a short, anonymous questionnaire and obtain a unique access code and password.

To help promote these programs, download, print, and display the following flyers at your practice site (all PDF):

Your local health department may also be able to provide 2Morrow Health wallet cards that you can provide to your clients.

This is Quitting (TIQ), from Truth Initiative, is an innovative text-to-quit vaping program for young people ages 13-24 that shows the real side of quitting, both the good and the bad. TIQ helps motivate, inspire, and support young people throughout the quitting process. When young people join TIQ, they will receive proven tips and strategies to quit and stay off e-cigarettes and vapor products from other young people just like themselves who tried to quit.

All Washington state residents have free access to TIQ. Participants sign up by texting VAPEFREEWA to 88709. More information about This is Quitting is at doh.wa.gov/vapefreewa.
