Rotavirus is found in the stool of infected persons. It is easily spread when people put something (food, water, hands, or an object) into their mouth that has the virus on or in it.
Symptoms are:
- High fever.
- Vomiting.
- Severe diarrhea.
These symptoms can cause a child to lose body fluids and become dehydrated, which can lead to hospitalization.
Each year in the U.S. rotavirus is responsible for:
- More than 400,000 doctor visits.
- More than 200,000 emergency room visits.
- 55,000 to 70,000 hospitalizations.
- 20-60 deaths.
Almost all children in the U.S. are infected with rotavirus before their fifth birthday.
