There are two types of polio vaccine:
Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) is the only polio vaccine that has been given in the United States since 2000. IPV is a shot given in the leg or the arm, depending on age. The second vaccine type is oral polio vaccine (OPV) which is used in other countries.
