If you are seeking an abortion or comprehensive reproductive health care, you should be aware that many Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs)—sometimes called pregnancy resources centers—are not operated by licensed health care providers.

These centers may look like full-service health clinics, but they often operate differently. CPCs may:

  • Offer patient care by staff or volunteers who are not licensed health care providers.
  • Not be required to follow patient privacy laws such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) guidelines. This means they could tell others that you are seeking abortion care.
  • Offer free services like ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, counseling, sexually transmitted disease (STI) testing, or free pregnancy and parenting supplies. But they may not provide information on all pregnancy options, including abortion.
  • Refuse to provide abortion care or referrals for abortion services.
  • Share information that is not evidence-based about abortion or other reproductive health care.
  • Be located near comprehensive reproductive health clinics that do offer abortion care, which may make them hard to distinguish.
  • Pressure you to not have an abortion.

How Do I Know if a Facility Provides Abortions or Comprehensive Reproductive Health Care?

To make sure you get the care you need, contact the clinic directly. Questions you can ask might be:

  • Is this facility regulated by the Washington State Department of Health?
  • If I come in for a visit, will I be seen by a licensed health care provider?
  • What kind of health care provider will I see during my visit (doctor, physician assistant, nurse, midwife, etc.)?
  • Does the facility accept health insurance or Medicaid?
  • Does this facility provide abortions?
  • Does this facility provide referrals to clinics that provide abortions?
