Data

Data Overview

The Washington (WA) PMP began collecting prescription dispensing records for Schedule II, III, IV, and V drugs on October 7, 2011. Records of prescriptions dispensed outside of WA state, prescribed for less than or equal to 24 hours, administered or given to a patient in the hospital, and dispensed from a Department of Corrections pharmacy (unless an offender is released with a prescription), Opioid Treatment Program, and some federally operated pharmacies are not collected (Indian Health Services and Veterans Affairs report voluntarily as of 2015).

Data Documentation

Publicly available data

Interactive tools for visualizing and downloading publicly available opioid and other controlled substances prescribing data.

  • Opioid Awareness Dashboards – Two dashboards, one containing opioid prescribing metrics at the County level and the other at the Accountable Communities of Health level, are updated quarterly. Technical notes on these metrics can be found on the data notes for Opioid dashboards (PDF). For best results, the following web browser versions or later are recommended: Windows IE 11, Mozilla Firefox 52.5, Google Chrome 65.0, and Safari IOS 11.3.
  • Washington Open Data Portal – contains de-identified WA PMP analytic file data (i.e., excludes patient, prescriber, and dispenser identifiers), updated quarterly. This portal allows the user to view the data, perform queries, create visualizations, and export data for offline use in other applications. Please note that the full data file is >13 GB and could take a long time to download. A selection of popular queries are available here (PDF).
Reports

The department develops and provides reports to increase understanding about the PMP, its use, and its impact on the opioid epidemic.

Report to the legislature – PMP Integration

The Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) is required under Engrossed Substitute House Bill 1427 (PDF) to provide an annual report to the legislature:

“Beginning November 15, 2017, the department shall annually report to the governor and the appropriate committees of the legislature on the number of facilities, entities, or provider groups identified in RCW 70.225.040(3) (l) and (m) that have integrated their federally certified electronic health records with the prescription monitoring program utilizing the state health information exchange.”
