Paths to Qualify for Certification
There are three pathways that an applicant can follow to obtain a birth doula certification. For more information, see the Infographic of Competencies or visit WAC 246-835.
Applicants must meet and provide proof of at least one of the following:
- Training Program: Successful completion of the education requirements in WAC 246-835-015 consisting of:
- Culturally congruent ancestral practices, training, and education as required in WAC 246-835-025; and
- Completion of an approved program in WAC 246-835-020 or completion of the ancestral pathway in WAC 246-835-022.
- Ancestral or non-Approved Training Program: Obtain three written client testimonial letters or letters of recommendation using testimonial form provided by the Department of Health. One letter of recommendation must be from either a licensed provider, a community-based organization, or a practicing birth doula or midwife. Reference the pathway infographic or WAC 246-835-022 for regulations on this pathway.
- Out-of-State: An initial applicant currently certified to practice as a birth doula in another state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States may be licensed by endorsement. The applicant must comply with requirements as specified in Chapter 18.47 RCW and WAC 246-835.
