Vaccine Selection, Ordering, and Returns

Health care providers in the state who are enrolled in the Washington State Adult Vaccine Program can order publicly supplied vaccine at no cost. This page contains information for enrolled providers on how to order publicly supplied vaccine using the Washington State Immunization Information System.

Vaccine Selection

  • Vaccine selection is completed in the Adult Vaccine Program provider agreement.
  • During enrollment and re-enrollment, providers may choose up to 5 vaccine types to order through the program. These are the vaccines that will be available in providers’ order sets in the IIS.
    • You must select COVID-19 vaccine and/ or flu vaccine as one of your top 5 selections if you wish to receive either of these vaccine types through the program.

Vaccine Ordering

  • Providers who select COVID-19 or flu vaccine may place orders for these vaccine types on an ongoing, as needed basis while supplies last.
  • Subject to funding, all other vaccine types offered through the program (non-COVID-19/ non-flu vaccines) are available for providers to order for a limited time twice each year. Providers may request up to 6 months’ worth of vaccine.
    • Ordering opportunities are announced through the Adult Vaccine Program Updates newsletter and typically occur in February/March and August/September.
    • Ordering is usually open for about 3 weeks. After that it takes another 2-3 weeks to allocate the vaccines, and then vaccines are delivered.
    • Subject to funding, provider requests may be reduced based on previous usage and wastage data.

Vaccine Advertisement

  • If you are in need of AVP vaccine between ordering opportunities, the Vaccine Advertisement function in the IIS allows providers to both advertise and search for short-dated AVP vaccine available for transfer.

Vaccine Allocation Plan

The Vaccine Allocation Plan (PDF) describes the Department of Health’s (DOH) vaccine allocation strategy for fall respiratory immunization products during times of limited supply. This includes a strategy to address (a) phased in or limited supply at the beginning of the season or start-up of a new product, and (b) limited supply or production issues leading to limited product availability for a specified period.

During times of limited availability of a vaccine or immunization product, our goal is to balance accessibility, supply, and demand. The goal is to implement an approach that equitably offers products across the state and mitigates disparities in access. Allocation strategies are used until supply meets demand.

Online Vaccine Returns Process

Submit returns for expired and spoiled vaccines. Do not throw away publicly supplied vaccines.
