Blood Lead Reporting

Rules

  • WAC 246-101 requires laboratories (including facilities that use Point of Care Machines) to report all blood lead test results to the Washington State Department of Health.
  • All blood lead levels 5 µg/dL or higher must be reported within two business days for patients of all ages.
  • All other test results must be reported within 30 days.

NOTE: The state blood lead action level is now 3.5 µg/dL. Reporting timeframe requirements for laboratories in the Notifiable Conditions rule remain the same. This means that results between 3.5 to 4.9 µg/dL are required to be reported within 30 days, while results 5 µg/dL and above must be reported within two business days.

Reporting

Option 1: We encourage Electronic Lab Reporting (ELR).

Option 2: If your laboratory or clinic is not set up for ELR, email the blood lead program to begin reporting data or if you have questions about reporting.
