Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
As a Certified Medical Cannabis Consultant, you must complete at least 10 hours of continuing education (CE) each year to renew your certificate. CE rules are outlined under WAC 246-72-100. Hours in excess of the 10-hour requirement do not carry over into the next reporting period.
DOH Two-hour Video and Quiz
NOTICE - The following video and quiz are now OPTIONAL until January 1, 2026. Please read our Continuing Education Policy (PDF) for full details on this change.
The department recognizes that existing training may be repetitive and outdated for many certified consultants. Due to current resource limitations, we have not been able to update the training material. For these reasons, we created a policy to create flexibility until we update the training.
You still must obtain 10 hours of CE each year and comply with all other requirements in WAC 246-72-100. We encourage alternative education opportunities that better support your continued professional growth and expertise.
Since new consultants may find value in the two-hour department training, it still counts as two of any consultant’s ten required continuing education credits.

Training Methods and Training Providers
You may earn CE credits through in-person or seminars, lectures, workshops and professional conferences or through distance learning webinars, audio/video broadcasting, teleconferencing, e-learning, or webcasts. There is no limit to the number of hours you may earn under any single training method.
We do not require you to take CE through specific training providers. As long as the CE you take is under an acceptable topic and otherwise meets the requirements in WAC 246-72-100, it is at your discretion to determine where to find CE that meets your professional development needs.
Acceptable Topics
- Washington state laws and rules relating to cannabis
- Science-based information about cannabis
- Addiction and substance use disorder
- Communication skills
- Professional ethics and values
Unacceptable Topics
- Business and management courses
- Healthcare training unrelated to cannabis
- Any topic unrelated to the practice parameters of a medical cannabis consultant.
Documentation of Completion
Up to 25 percent of certificate holders may be randomly audited for CE compliance after the credential is renewed. You must provide acceptable documentation of completion of continuing education hours upon request and instruction of the department. You must retain CE records for at least four years.
Acceptable forms of documentation are:
- Transcripts
- Certificates of completion, or
- Other formal documentation that includes the following information:
- Participant's name
- Course title
- Course content
- Date(s) of course
- Number of hours earned
- Provider's name(s) and
- Signature of the program sponsor or course instructor. Distance learning courses are exempt from the signature requirement.
Failure to comply with the audit documentation request or failure to supply acceptable documentation within 60 days may result in disciplinary action.
