Our Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Program helps community health CHWs with essential knowledge and skills to support health equity and improve community well-being.

Who Can Take These Courses?

These courses are for anyone working or planning to work as a:

  • Community Health Worker
  • Promotores de Salud
  • Patient navigator
  • Peer counselor
  • Similar positions in community health

You do not need to be currently working in these positions to enroll.

Course Details

  • All courses are free and delivered online
  • Most courses are available in English and Spanish
  • Though designed primarily for CHWs based in Washington, the courses are open to anyone interested in our program. You do not need to be physically present or working in Washington.
  • We provide a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the course.

Note: We do not have formal certification or credential process. Washington does not require formal certification of CHWs.

CHW Core Competency Course

This is a foundational course for aspiring CHWs. It covers essential CHWs skills, including:

  • Community outreach
  • Health communication
  • Social determinants of health
  • Service navigation and coordination
  • Cultural mediation
  • Advocacy and capacity building

Course Format

  • Offered quarterly in English and Spanish (separate classes)
  • 8 weeks long
  • Includes 2 required webinars in the first and last weeks with flexible scheduling
  • Learners need 2-4 hours per week with course activities and assignments
  • Optional weekly office hours are available for additional support

Exciting news! We are modernizing the CHW Core Competency curriculum to align with the CHW roles and competencies recommended by the National Council on CHW Core Consensus Standards (National C3 Council). The updated CHW Core Competency Course is expected to launch in July 2025—stay tuned for more details!

Health Specific Modules (HSMs)

These multiple short, specialized courses focus on specific diseases, health conditions, and public health topics, such as:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Breast cancer
  • Immunizations

The health topics listed above are not comprehensive, and CHWs can select the modules most relevant to their work. Completing the CHW Core Competency Course is encouraged but not required before enrolling in HSMs.

Course Format

  • Offered quarterly with rotating topics
  • Learners can choose up to 3 modules per quarter
  • Many HSMs are available in English and Spanish
  • 2–4 hours to complete each HSM module
  • No webinars are required, but optional office hours are available for additional support.

Note: We are revising and updating the HSMs, so only a limited number of modules are currently available.

Pediatric CHW Course

This course is for CHWs working with children, youth, and families. It covers core CHW principles while incorporating pediatric-focused topics, including:

  • Early childhood relational health
  • K-12 mental and behavioral health

Course Format

  • Part 1: A 6-week foundational course, covering the same topics as the CHW Core Competency Course. The language and content are tailored for CHWs working with children, youth, and families.
  • Part 2: A 3-week specialized track. You can choose:
    • Early Childhood Relational Health
    • K-12 Mental and Behavioral Health
  • Self-guided without instructor-led webinars
  • Learners need 2-4 hours per week

Optional weekly office hours and optional Learning Collaborative sessions (set dates and times) for the learners’ collective learning and networking.
