The Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Drug Assistance Program (PrEP DAP) is offered through the Washington State Department of Health (DOH). It helps people in Washington, who are prescribed PrEP and need help paying for generic PrEP medication, PrEP doctor visits, and PrEP labs.
We have created the following FAQ section to help answer some of the most common questions about PrEP and PrEP DAP.
What is PrEP?
PrEP is a highly effective medication prescribed by a provider that can prevent HIV infection when taken as directed.
- PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV-1 infection through sex or injection drug use.
- PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy, so condoms and other prevention methods may be recommended. Learn more about PrEP Facts, San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
How does PrEP DAP work?
PrEP DAP may be able to pay your provider, laboratory, or pharmacy for your costs for generic PrEP medications, PrEP doctor visits, and PrEP tests plus certain medications.
How does PrEP work with health insurance?
For people with health insurance, PrEP medication, PrEP doctor visits and PrEP tests should be provided at $0 cost. See the “Common Questions” section below for information about what to do about bills for PrEP medications, PrEP doctor visits, and PrEP tests.
PrEP DAP has a statewide network of providers, laboratories, and pharmacies that will submit your bills to PrEP DAP for payment. PrEP DAP pays the bills if you are eligible on the date of service and the medication or services are covered by PrEP DAP. Learn more about PrEP DAP Covered Services and Provider Locator.
What services are covered?
Coverage is limited to generic PrEP and medications found on the List of covered medications (PDF) and health care services found on the PrEP DAP List of Covered Services (PDF). Pharmacies and providers must be contracted with PrEP DAP. Learn more about covered medications, covered services, providers and labs that contract with PrEP DAP.
What can you tell me about PrEP DAP eligibility?
You must apply for PrEP DAP to make sure you are eligible for help paying for medication and care. If approved, you will be enrolled in PrEP DAP.
Once enrolled, you will receive a letter from the Department of Health Client Services with eligibility information and a prescription drug identification card from Ramsell. You should share this information with your provider and pharmacy.

The application and information to assist with applying are located on the How to Apply for PrEP DAP webpage.
How do I tell my health insurance plan where to send confidential and sensitive information?
Submit a request to your health insurance plan. It is your right to have confidential, private, and sensitive information sent to YOU instead of the person who pays for your health insurance plan. In Washington state, all “sensitive health care services” are required to be confidential as long as you send a request and instructions to your health plan. Learn more from these Frequently Asked Questions about Insurance Confidential Information Requests (PDF).
Does PrEP DAP offer only drug assistance?
No. PrEP DAP also pays for limited PrEP-related medical visits and lab tests. Enrollees must go to providers and labs that contract with PrEP DAP (PDF). PrEP & Health Insurance: For people with health insurance, PrEP medication, PrEP doctor visits and PrEP tests should be provided at $0 cost.
Do I have to go to a provider or clinic in the PrEP DAP network?
Yes. PrEP DAP will only pay in-network providers and clinics so if you choose to use an out-of-network provider or clinic then we cannot help pay for your out-of-pocket costs.
Can my provider join the network?
Yes. If your provider would like to become contracted with the WA state Department of Health, they can submit a Client Services EIP and PrEP DAP Provider Contract (PDF) or reach out to EIP.ClaimsPayments@doh.wa.gov with any questions.
Can I send my bills directly to PrEP DAP to get paid?
No. PrEP DAP cannot send payments to enrollees. PrEP DAP pays in-network providers when they submit bills for pre-approved services provided to PrEP DAP enrollees.
What should I do if I get a doctor or lab bill?
Contact us for help. Sometimes this happens. If it does and you believe the services should be covered by PrEP DAP, contact our office so we can work with your provider. PrEP & Health Insurance: PrEP medication, PrEP doctor visits and PrEP tests should be provided at $0 cost.
