HPV Vaccine is Most Effective Between Ages 9 and 12 Years
- The HPV vaccine provides long-lasting protection against the most common cancers caused by HPV.
- Doctors and nurses recommend the HPV vaccine for children starting at age 9 years.
- The HPV vaccine is most effective at this age, it produces the most infection-fighting cells, or antibodies. This also ensures immunity is already in place before any exposure to the virus.
- If your teen hasn't received the vaccine, it is not too late! Talk to their doctor or nurse about getting them immunized as soon as possible. This is a recommended vaccine up through age 26.
- If you are an adult age 27 through age 45, talk with your health care provider to see if you should get the HPV vaccine.
American Academy of Pediatrics Recommends HPV Vaccine Starting at Age 9 Years
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends two doses of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for optimal cancer prevention. Early vaccination is key to preventing HPV-related infections and cancers:
- If vaccinated between ages 9–14: Two doses recommended
- If vaccinated between ages 15–26: Three doses recommended
HPV Vaccine is Free for Every Child Under Age 19 Years
The Washington State Childhood Vaccine Program provides all American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended vaccines at no cost for children through age 18, and they're available from health care providers across the state. Health care providers may charge an office visit fee and an administration fee for the vaccine. However, if you cannot afford the administration fee, you may ask your provider to waive it.
Most health insurance plans cover the HPV vaccine for adults who are in the recommended age range through age 26. If you’re uninsured, you can get the HPV vaccine for free from the Washington State Adult Vaccine Program.
The provider map can be used to identify providers who received publicly-supplied vaccines through the Childhood Vaccine Program and Adult Vaccine Program. Contact the provider in advance regarding availability of supply and for more information regarding the policies associated with the practice.
