Burley Lagoon, Filucy Bay, Rocky Bay Shellfish Protection Districts - Anecdotes and Links

Anecdotes

Greatest Success

The Ecology Centennial Grant in Burley Lagoon is a collaborative process that shares pots of money and limits administrative costs. Since the start of the program, the county has seen upgrades in Vaughn Bay, Minter Bay, Mayo Cove (Penrose Point), Von Geldern Cove and Henderson Bay.

Greatest Challenge

Due to attorney concerns with contract language, SWM couldn't contract with Kitsap Public Health for work on an Ecology centennial grant. The Septic Repair Grant and Loan Team wants to continue with the septic loan program but hasn't identified a sustainable funding source. By far and away, the greatest challenge to the SPD is full funding of a complete and rigorous grant and loan program to fund failing OSS repairs. This has been identified as one of the top priorities of the Alliance for a Healthy South Sound.

Needs to Further Goals or Pollution Control Plan / Lessons Learned

The recently revised local regulation that increases the allowable density of animals on a property needs to be evaluated because this greatly increases the likelihood of having associated water quality problems. The SPD needs the political support to revise this regulation.

Outreach and education is a key component to pollution prevention. It is important for people to be aware of how their behaviors can impact the environment.
