Indicators, Themes, and Overlays

The EHD map is displayed on WTN's Information by Location (IBL) tool. The data on the map includes 19 health measures which are divided into four themes. 

Environmental Exposures

  • Diesel exhaust PM 2.5 emissions
  • Ozone concentration
  • Particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) concentration
  • Proximity to heavy traffic roadways
  • Toxic release from facilities (RSEI model)

Environmental Effects

  • Lead risk from housing
  • Proximity to hazardous waste facilities
  • Proximity to National Priorities List sites (Superfund Sites)
  • Proximity to Risk Management Plan (RMP) facilities
  • Wastewater discharge

Sensitive Populations

  • Death from cardiovascular disease
  • Low birth weight

Socioeconomic Factors

  • No high school diploma
  • Poverty
  • Race - people of color
  • Primary language other than English
  • Transportation expense
  • Unaffordable housing
  • Unemployment

In addition to health measures, the EHD map also includes overlays. These are sets of information that are not used as part of the rank calculations. Overlay examples include locations of hospitals or hazardous waste sites. Currently, there are over 30 overlays (PDF) that can be selected to show more related information to the population in a specific community in Washington. 

Learn about some of the ways the Environmental Health Disparities (EHD) map is used to support Washington's clean energy transformation. This is an effort that commits Washington to an electricity supply that’s free of greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
