Certification Requirements

Education

Applicants for speech-language pathology assistant certification must provide proof of successfully completing a board-approved associate degree, certificate of proficiency, or bachelor's degree from a speech, language, and hearing program. Transcripts must show 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of speech-language pathology coursework, and 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of general education coursework. Official transcripts must indicate the degree and the date it was granted. Transcripts not in English must have an official translation.

  • Alexandria Technical and Community College, Minnesota – Associate of Applied Science
  • Alexandria Technical and Community College, Distance Minnesota – Associate of Applied Science
  • Chemeketa College, Oregon – Associate of Applied Science
  • Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico – Associate of Applied Science
  • Estrella Mountain Community College, Arizona – Associate of Applied Science
  • Mitchell Technical College, South Dakota – Associate of Applied Science
  • Orange Coast College, California – Associate of Science
  • Pasadena City College, California – Associate of Applied Science
  • Portland State University, Oregon – Certificate in Communication Sciences and Disorders 
  • Shoreline Community College, Seattle (Program discontinued in 2010)

*Four-Year Degree Programs

  • All Bachelor of Arts or Science degrees in speech, language, and hearing programs from accredited institutions of higher education are approved.

*To demonstrate 100 hours of supervised patient/client/student work experience that is not reflected on the transcript per WAC 246-828-617 (2), the applicant must complete and submit the work experience form (PDF). This form is part of the Speech Language Pathology Assistant Certification Application Packet.

State License Verification

Applicants must list all states where they do or did hold credentials. This list must also include when the applicant has applied for a credential, even if a credential was not granted. The jurisdiction where the applicant is or was credentialed must complete and submit the verification form. The jurisdiction must send the completed form directly to the department.

Personal Data Questions

Each applicant must answer the personal data questions. If there is a positive answer to the professional liability claims history question, the applicant must send an explanation of the nature of the case, data, and summary of care given, copies of the original complaint, and the settlement or final disposition. If a case is pending, the applicant must indicate the status.
