COVID-19 Therapeutics
Paxlovid and Lagevrio (molnupiravir) are therapeutic products that have received Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Veklury (remdesivir) is an antiviral drug that has been approved by the U.S. FDA. All are for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in non-hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who are at high risk for progressing to severe disease and/or hospitalization. Veklury can also be used for hospitalized individuals. Distribution for Paxlovid and Lagevrio (molnupiravir) is provided by the U.S. Health and Human Services and facilitated by the Washington State Department of Health.
Monoclonal Antibodies (mAbs)
Monoclonal antibodies are laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system's ability to fight off harmful antigens. Currently, there are no mAbs authorized for emergency use. Check the ASPR website for the current therapeutic products available.
Oral Antivirals
Oral antivirals can only be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider. Two products have been granted EUAs by the FDA:
- Lagevrio/molnupiravir (Merck) – This works by incorporating into viral RNA and causing mutations that disrupt replication.
- Paxlovid (Pfizer) – This is an antiviral therapy that consists of two separate medications: nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. The former is a protease inhibitor that prevents replication; the latter is also a protease inhibitor that slows the breakdown of nirmatrelvir.
