Organic Acid Disorders

Babies born with organic acid disorders cannot remove certain waste products from their blood. This can lead to vomiting, extreme weakness, seizures, developmental delays, coma or death. Treatment includes a special diet, close monitoring, and medications.

These disorders occur is about 1 in every 25,000 births in Washington State.

The Newborn Screening Program encourages all patients to discuss any concerns they have regarding newborn screening results with their health care provider or with follow-up staff at the Newborn Screening Program.
