Annas Bay Shellfish Protection District - Anecdotes and Links

Anecdotes

Greatest Success

The upgrade of closure area due to decease in fecal coliform concentration in marine and shoreline water samples was a success. Personal contact with residents allowed for breaking down of perceived barriers and further education.

Greatest Challenge

Resistance (but usually not absolute) to site access is a major challenge. Residents who believe they are not a potential problem and blame others (agriculture, forestry, nearby biosolids application area) for deceased water quality or don't think there is a problem.

Needs to Further Goals or Pollution Control Plan / Lessons Learned

Long term clean water goals require longer terms than 2-4 year grant cycles. A dedicated funding source is needed.
