Asthma in the Workplace

Asthma is the most common work-related lung disease. It is a reportable condition in Washington State.

Work-related asthma is a large but preventable health problem. It reduces quality of life and ability to work. About 15 percent of adult asthma can be linked to workplace exposures.

Types of Work-related Asthma

Occupational Asthma

Caused by exposure to substances in the workplace leading to breathing difficulties over time.

Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS)

Asthma symptoms occur right after exposure to high levels of an irritant in the workplace.

Work-Aggravated Asthma

Pre-existing asthma made worse by substances in the workplace.
