Rules in Progress

The rules writing process is open to the public. The public is welcome to take part in helping us write rules. Rules are also known as regulations, Washington Administrative Code, or WAC. The rule-making process includes public notices and workshops, and usually a public hearing before a rule becomes final.

Current Rules in Progress

Rules for Athletic Trainers regarding Medication

A new rule is being developed to provide clear rules for athletic trainers on the management of over the counter and prescription medications, and to set clear training and education standards for athletic trainers looking to purchase, store and administer prescription medications for their patients. This rule also clarifies that the term “medications” does not include controlled substances. The rule is expected to be adopted on May 9, 2024. Read the full document, WSR 24-07-065 (PDF).

Revised Continuing Education Requirements in Health Equity

The continuing education requirements in health equity for athletic trainers have been updated. These changes, which align with SB 5229 (PDF), mandate an additional hour of health equity education every two years. This fulfills the requirement of two hours of health equity education every four years. The rule came into effect on January 1, 2024. Learn more about the new health equity training and find free courses on our website. See the full CR-103 WSR #23-22-097 document (PDF).
