The rules writing process is open to the public. The public is welcome to take part in helping us write rules. Rules are also known as regulations, Washington Administrative Code, or WAC. The rule-making process includes public notices and workshops, and usually a public hearing before a rule becomes final.

Current rules in progress

WAC 246-851-440 through 246-851-470 – The Board of Optometry is considering updating health professional monitoring programs terminology as required by Substitute Senate Bill (SSB) 5496 Health professional monitoring programs. 

WAC 246-851-090 through 246-851-230 – The Board will conduct a review of continuing education (CE) and related rules to consider increasing the number of allowable online credits. The board may also make clarifications to existing rules and updates to citations as needed. Rulemaking may include creating new rule sections and repealing existing rule sections. 

Chapter 246-851 WAC – The Board is considering adopting the health equity continuing education (CE) model rules, WAC 246-12-800 through 246-12-830 to comply with RCW 43.70.613 as amended by Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5229 (Chapter 276, Laws of 2021). The board will also consider whether additional CE hours and course topics should be included.
