Drinking Water Week

Three blown glass art pieces are placed one in front of the other, each slightly to the right so the perspective overlaps. Each piece is similar in shape and design but unique. They have a teardrop shape, with clear glass for the exterior and blue rippled glass for the interior. The thickness of the clear glass increases from top to bottom, and takes up about 20% of the height at the base. The rippled blue interior looks like a drop of water within the clear exterior.

Drinking Water Week 2026—May 3-9

Each May, we join communities across the country to celebrate Drinking Water Week. It’s a time to recognize the people and systems that keep our drinking water safe and reliable. Through our annual awards, we honor exceptional water systems and operators who demonstrate outstanding commitment to public health and service. Award recipients are nominated by their peers, stakeholders, and others across the drinking water community. Each year, the Governor issues a formal proclamation recognizing Drinking Water Week, which we feature on this page.

2026 Drinking Water Week Nomination Process

Is there a water system you're proud of? Do you know an outstanding waterworks operator? Nominate them for an award!

We collect nominations mid-November 2025 through February 16, 2026. Anyone can nominate someone in the drinking water industry for an award. When the survey is ready, we'll post it to this page for the general public. We'll email it to water system operators, owners, and others in the industry. Please note: We do not accept late nominations.

Some of the categories we use are below. We also adjust categories to fit special situations.

Above and Beyond. Recognition for going above the normal call of duty and/or to provide assistance to neighboring water systems.

Commitment to Excellence. For those who continuously strive for excellence in providing safe and reliable drinking water.

Grace Under Pressure/Perseverance Under Adversity. For handling a crisis well, or for persevering under consistent challenges.

Lifetime Achievement. Reserved for those who are retiring.

Most Improved. This award is typically presented to water systems that overcome a bad situation and now provide excellent service.

Operator of the Year. To recognize an operator for their dedication and commitment. They also help educate and mentor others in the water industry, lending help and knowledge where needed.

Most Innovative. Presented to water operators/systems/organizations that come up with innovative solutions for challenges they face.
