Long COVID Definition

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and the CDC define Long COVID as "an infection-associated chronic condition (IACC) that occurs after SARSCoV-2 infection and is present for at least 3 months as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that affects one or more organ systems." This definition is intentionally broad and inclusive to accurately represent the range of possible presentations of Long COVID. Clinical judgement is necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

More information about the NASEM Long COVID definition is available in their highlights and infographic documents released in July 2024.

L&I claims process for Long COVID:

  • Any claim for Long COVID must first be filed as a claim for the work-related contraction of COVID. Long COVID is considered a sequela of the original infection. A workers’ compensation claim for COVID can be allowed when the following criteria are met:
    • The worker’s occupation creates an increased risk or greater likelihood of contracting COVID i.e. first responders or medical professionals.
    • If not for their job activities, the worker would not likely have contracted COVID. The requirements of the job need to be the cause rather than exposure from a co-worker.
    • The worker can identify a specific source or event during the performance of their employment that resulted in exposure to the COVID virus, i.e. an outbreak at a nursing home or a first responder transporting an individual known to be sick with COVID.
  • There is positive testing confirming the contraction of COVID around the time of the infection. Home testing is not accepted.
  • Once a claim for COVID is accepted, L&I would rely on medical information from a worker’s treating providers as to the existence of Long COVID. Treatment that is proper and necessary for the condition would then be covered as well as any disability because of it.
  • L&I has additional information on COVID-19 including guidance for preventing COVID-19 and FAQs.

PFML claims process for Long COVID:

  • Applicants can learn more about the differences between Medical Leave and Family Leave and what qualifies under PFML.
  • Applicants do not need a positive test for COVID-19 to ensure coverage for Long COVID.
  • Applicants will need documentation from a qualifying healthcare worker confirming a serious health condition and the applicant’s specific needs.
