Abortion Coverage for Providence Health Plan Members in Washington

In Washington, most insurance plans must cover abortion services.

However, Providence Health Plans do not cover most abortion-related services due to religious objections.

To make sure everyone in Washington can have abortion services if they want to, the Department of Health created the Increasing Access to Reproductive Choice (IARC) program.

If you have a Washington Providence Health Plan, the Department of Health will reimburse your provider directly for abortion services.

For Patients

If you’re enrolled in a Washington Providence Health Plan, you may not have abortion coverage. You still have options through the IARC program.

How to Make Sure Your Abortion Services Are Paid for by IARC

  • Receive abortion care from one of the providers listed below. These providers will automatically submit a claim to the Department of Health to cover your care.
  • If you receive abortion care from a provider in Washington not listed below, ask the clinic staff if they know about the IARC program. You can also share this webpage with them. They can follow the steps below to submit a claim.

Important

You are responsible for all abortion service costs until your provider submits a claim using the official claim form linked below.

Once your provider submits the completed claim form, your financial responsibility is removed, and you won’t have to pay anything, or you will be reimbursed for payments you already made.

Do not contact the Department of Health directly. Emails sent to the address below are not protected by HIPAA, meaning they are not private.

If you have an Oregon Providence Health Plan, please visit the Oregon Health Authority website for more information.
