Fukushima and Radioactivity in Washington

 

In March 2011, several nuclear reactors at the Fukushima, Japan nuclear power station were crippled after a devastating tsunami damaged emergency equipment.

International agencies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency, and national agencies that include the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission track recovery progress in Japan. Although we don't directly monitor what's happening in Japan, we can share information that we do track in our state.

Department of Health's role

From 2011 through 2015, we regularly posted test results for radioactivity related to Fukushima. We stopped regular posting because results continue to be well below detection. We will post updates again if we receive information that there has been a release of some kind from Fukushima or elsewhere in the world. Information through 2015 is available on these pages:
